This was written after I had already written and scheduled my post on turning 40!
It was inspired by Kathryn’s post: “If you want to play #blogjune and have not, or are already playing …. and would like a topic for Wednesday 28 June, then please be part of my Time Travel Challenge and answer one or both of these questions … and post a link to Twitter with the #blogjune hashtag:
- If you could go back and tell your 20 year old self one thing that was going to happen to you between then and today, what would that be?
- In 20 years time (presuming the world gets better, not worse) what do you think will be the biggest technological difference between your life now and your life then ? “
Wow it’s almost 20 years since I was 20!
At 20 I was at uni, almost finished my BEd degree (which they no longer teach!) and planning on being a primary school teacher.
That #neverhappened.
Well the graduating part did, but I used to call the degree my expensive piece of wallpaper! I was working ‘afterschool’ and Saturdays at my local public library, and the next year that morphed into pretty much full-time work after graduation and applying for 100 teaching jobs and only getting one (unsuccessful) interview in the middle of Northland!
At 20 I still lived at home (a house with no TV) and I didn’t have a driver licence and never been overseas, etc. That was all soon to change! In the few months before I turned 21 I moved out of home into a flat with 4 other girls (yes it was noisy), bought a little TV for my room, and got my learners licence. I think back then the legal age for drinking in NZ was 20 so I probably had my first drink then too.
Anyway back to the point, what would I tell my 20 year old self?
Probably what I still tell myself today, to calm down and try not to take on all the worries of the world.
